Summary of August 8

Last month, I downgraded from THE SHIP to THE SHOP to make the scale of my career reboot manageable. I’d say it’s been going better because I’m measuring my progress in terms of creating showcase projects and writing stories about them.

The showcase projects have been whittled down to three, and I make slow progress on each of these.

• Deno WebApp Platform - Sri’s software playground
• Sri’s Digital PKMS - The system I use to publish this website and its notes
• Web Revival Group - A collective like-minded writers and designers on the internet

My primary this month is the Deno WebApp PlatformThe public repo is at codeberg.org/dsriseah/deno-apptest, as it is an opinionated distillation of my past years of experience doing JavaScript development. Not only will it show what I can do as a full-stack developer, but it will be the foundation for making my own webapps to bring my productivity tools online. So, the priority is to get it to the point where it allows me to freely express ideas in code without a lot of mucking about with server infrastructure.

Stories, by comparison, is about communicating my interests and values using a cozy personal voice. In many of my previous articles, I tend to provide an overwhelming amount of detail that is a lot to swallow. I want the Stories section to be personable and fun, so I’ve been pretending I’m a “magical adventure cat” that, without explanation, is doing the things that I’m doing. New Projects and Career Pivots

I’ve also resurrected the idea of having a “Tiny School”. I made a Graphic Design BasicsView Graphics Design Basics 1 curriculum (PDF). course for my sister, who has been teaching herself Canva. It’s based on my own digital graphic design coursework from ages ago, adapted for Affinity Designer.

I heard about a job listing at my public library when I mentioned an acquaintance of mine was looking for a job. While the acquaintance wasn’t interested, I found the position intriguing because it was a community-facing role and isn’t that the kind of thing I want more of? I want to talk to people about what they’re doing! Previously, I have been wondering how to repackage my past experience with computer programming and design into something more “humane”, but this job listing helped me reimagine those skills into helpful support instead of the main job. This is exactly the kind of flip-a-roo I have been doing?

While not quite a match for the position, I decided to apply anyway as it would make me update my resume and portfolio. This took over a week to do, but I submitted the application and now I also have a new linkpage that points to a new portfolio section. It still looks pretty rough to me, but
