WHAT IS THE WEB REVIVAL GROUP?

It’s a group of people who are want the Internet to be more personable and humane, making connections to each other the way it was before Facebook and other social media made the online experience toxic and shitty.

This group is for people who want to own their own websites on the Internet and be their own unique selves for whatever reason.

Q. Why do people want to come to this group?

  1. They recognize the internet kind of sucks now compared to 10-15 years ago when it was fun and weird.
  2. They like seeing variety in creative energies
  3. They want to see what other people are making and sharing online
  4. They want to share what they’re doing with people who “get it”
  5. They are curious about HOW others are making and sharing stuff online
  6. They want to feel like they are doing something to TAKE BACK THE INTERNET from the enshittifiers

Q. Why do I want people to come to this group?

  1. All of the above: Take back the Internet, Form Real Connections, Create a Wave that Spreads
  2. I want to find architects and organizational leaders to help codify what is special about this movement and help seed the ideas broadly.
  3. I want people to get to know each other and me in the local area and create supporting media to enable that
  4. I want to help solve problems that benefit this mission, make it memorable, and easy to understand by anyone so they want to join in and know how they can contribute.

Q. What DON’T I want to do?

  1. I don’t want to teach a class. I want people who have already started. They can take classes elsewhere.
  2. I don’t want to run a support group for business or marketing. There are classes for that. They can form a special interest group.
  3. I don’t want a “peanut gallery” of people who don’t do anything, don’t want to share, and reciprocate stories and knowledge.
  4. I don’t want to tolerate people who are there to politicize and gripe and don’t actually do anything constructive.
  5. I don’t want to be the only decision maker or host capable of listening and providing direction. I want mutuals.
  6. I don’t want to be democratic about the focus and direction of the group. They can form special interest groups under the umbrella and still retain access to our resources but not our name.

Q. What is the starting place?

  • Proposal! What is “taking back the internet?” Refine this list!
  • schedule a first meeting at the library! See who shows up?
  • Gather names and contact information of interested parties and their ideas
  • Do a planning pass with interested other parties to see what synergies exist (library)
  • Compile a list of potentially-related networks (e.g. makers, artists collectives)
  • Draft a mission statement, call to action, benefit statement, something to hook people
  • define a provisional charter to start, run for a short test
