I have a personal theory that people tend to see the world in terms of "pattern response" or "operating principles". I'm in the "principles" camp, and I apply a questioning mindset that resolves solutions through mental simulation grounded by my collection of conceptual models. By comparison, the "patterns to follow" group is more about recognizing what pattern is happening and responding with the learned response. I think both camps use BOTH methods, but one predominates over the other. Again, this is just a theory, not intended to be a reductive or disparaging one. When I am communicating with other people, I take note of which one seems to be preferred and adjust accordingly.
